In the 1970s, Uzoma Odimara, famously known by his stage name Area Scatter, made history as Nigeria’s first-known cross-dresser. A civil servant from Imo State, Area Scatter initially earned his livelihood working for the Nigerian government. However, his life took a dramatic turn during the Nigerian Civil War when he mysteriously disappeared for seven months, leaving many puzzled. After exactly seven months and seven days, he resurfaced, but with a striking transformation.

Upon his return, Area Scatter adopted a feminine appearance, walking with elegance and having his ears pierced, a bold departure from societal norms of the time. According to his own account, during his absence, he was endowed with mystical powers by the gods, which not only enhanced his musical talents but also heightened his feminine characteristics.

Area Scatter quickly launched a successful musical career, captivating audiences with his thumb piano, which was uniquely adorned with skull and crossbones. He became a highly skilled performer, known for his enchanting voice and ability to thrill crowds at various events. From weddings to clubs, and even traditional palaces, he was widely embraced across different social circles. His melodious voice and charismatic performances earned him invitations to sing at prestigious events, including appearances on major television programs.

Notable traditional rulers also invited him to perform at royal gatherings, where he showcased his extraordinary talent with pride and confidence. Over time, he formed his own band and continued to mesmerize audiences with his craft, becoming an iconic figure in Nigeria’s entertainment scene.

Unfortunately, Area Scatter’s life was cut short in a tragic car accident along the Port Harcourt-Owerri Expressway, but his legacy as a trailblazer in Nigerian music and culture lives on.
