Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North in the National Assembly, has disclosed that his total monthly earnings as a senator amount to N14 million.
Speaking on Thursday, Kalu addressed the widespread belief among some Nigerians that lawmakers live extravagant lifestyles while citizens endure economic hardship. He emphasized that his N14 million monthly package covers all operational costs, including staff salaries and office overheads.
“I earn N14 million for everything in a month. That includes overheads, staff salaries, and all other expenses,” the former Abia State governor clarified.
Kalu argued that the funds are insufficient to meet the demands of his office. He noted that expenses such as fueling his vehicles for travel to his constituency and maintaining his constituency office consume a significant portion of the earnings.
On Luxury Cars and Misconceptions About Senators
One of the recurring criticisms of the National Assembly is the provision of luxury vehicles for lawmakers. However, Kalu debunked the notion that senators receive personal vehicles from the government.
“No lawmaker is given a personal vehicle. Only the committees receive official vehicles for their work,” Kalu stated. “I sit in the Senate and hear so many things being said about us, but most of these claims are false.”
Economic Hardship and the Global COVID-19 Impact
Kalu also weighed in on Nigeria’s current economic challenges, stressing that the hardship is not unique to the country. He attributed part of the struggle to the lingering impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, explaining that countries with well-established economies are faring better because they built resilience over the years.
Addressing the government’s efforts, Kalu expressed confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to stabilizing the economy.
“The president knows the reality Nigerians are facing. He’s familiar with the streets and understands the plight of the people,” Kalu said. “In fact, some nights he drives around Abuja in his personal car to observe the situation firsthand.”
Kalu assured Nigerians that the government is aware of their suffering and is working towards solutions to alleviate the economic difficulties.
