Mrs. Uchechi Okwu-Kanu, the wife of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has renewed her call for the United Kingdom government to step in and secure her husband’s release. In a heartfelt message shared on her X account, she highlighted the UK’s historic role in championing human rights and fairness, appealing for urgent intervention in Kanu’s case.
In her post, Mrs. Kanu lamented that while the UK had been instrumental in the creation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights after World War II, recent governments have failed to uphold that legacy. She urged the UK to take decisive action to secure her husband’s release from detention by the Nigerian government.
Accompanying her plea, she shared an emotional message from their son, who expressed the deep pain of living without his father. Reflecting on a school assignment, the boy wrote, “No matter how much people think they know about our pain, nobody can feel the way I feel about the absence of my daddy in my life. Nor the exact pain it is causing us.”
Mrs. Kanu emphasized the need for the UK to maintain its legacy as a defender of human rights and called for the release of Kanu and other British citizens held in arbitrary detention.
Nnamdi Kanu, currently facing charges of treason and terrorism, has been in the custody of Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021 following his arrest in Kenya and subsequent rendition to Nigeria.
