The Imo State Police Command has linked Finland-based Biafra agitator Simon Ekpa to a recent attack on the Isiala-Mbano Local Government Area headquarters in Imo State, where two local vigilante members were killed. The incident occurred on Tuesday night when gunmen stormed the council headquarters, opening fire and setting several parked vehicles ablaze.
According to eyewitnesses, the assailants arrived at the secretariat around 8:30 p.m., firing indiscriminately and fatally wounding the two vigilante members on duty. The attackers also set parts of the council building on fire before fleeing the scene.
Imo State Police Command spokesman, Henry Okoye, informed reporters on Wednesday that the attack is believed to be in response to a one-month sit-at-home threat issued by Simon Ekpa, a self-proclaimed leader of the Biafra Government in Exile. Okoye noted that Ekpa had previously vowed to target government facilities and infrastructure during this period.
“Hoodlums suspected to be members of Simon Ekpa-led Biafra agitators attacked the Isiala-Mbano Local Government headquarters, firing sporadically,” Okoye stated. “We were aware of the threat and had deployed operatives alongside local vigilantes who engaged the attackers in a gun duel. Unfortunately, two vigilantes were seriously injured and are currently receiving treatment at the hospital. We are monitoring their condition closely.”
The attackers reportedly used locally-made petrol bombs to damage vehicles parked at the council premises. However, the police have since restored order in the area and launched an investigation to apprehend those responsible.
Okoye urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies, emphasizing that community support is crucial in identifying and apprehending the culprits. “These criminals are not invisible; they live among us,” he said.
The Imo State Police Command has intensified efforts to secure the state and prevent further attacks, calling on residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
