The Nigeria Police Force has issued a strong condemnation against the unauthorized use of official police uniforms and insignia by popular online personality Martins Otse, widely known by his alias “VDM.” This follows the release of a video on Otse’s social media platforms in which he appears dressed in police gear without official consent.
In response, the Police have initiated a comprehensive investigation to identify the origin of the police attire used in the video and to verify any permissions that might have been granted. This move underscores the Force’s commitment to upholding the sanctity of its symbols and authority.
The Nigeria Police emphasizes that the unauthorized usage of police uniforms or accoutrements is a serious offense under Nigerian law. According to Section 251 of the Criminal Code and Section 133 of the Penal Code, such actions are punishable offenses and carry stringent penalties.
While acknowledging the creative pursuits of young Nigerians in digital media, the Force has reiterated its stance on the responsible and lawful depiction of police symbols. The Nigeria Police warns that unauthorized use of police attire not only misrepresents the institution but also erodes public trust and respect for law enforcement. The Force calls on content creators and the general public to seek proper authorization when depicting police in their media to avoid sanctions.
