Honorable Obi Aguocha, representing the Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency of Abia State, recently paid a visit to Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). This visit, which took place on October 24, 2024, is part of Aguocha’s broader efforts to address ongoing challenges surrounding Kanu’s detention and to pursue a peaceful resolution.
Kanu, who was apprehended in Kenya and extradited to Nigeria against Nigeria law on June 27, 2021, faces multiple charges, including terrorism, treasonable felony, and incitement through his platform, Radio Biafra. In recent weeks, Kanu’s legal team raised concerns over restricted access to their client, prompting them to approach Aguocha for intervention.
In response, Hon. Aguocha engaged the Department of State Security (DSS) and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, seeking immediate action to restore access. A statement from Aguocha’s office confirmed that the DSS clarified restrictions arose following a request by Kanu’s legal team for the presiding judge to recuse herself—a move that impacted ongoing proceedings.
During Aguocha’s meeting with Kanu, attended by family member Ezioma Stella Ikpo, the lawmaker updated Kanu on the situation and confirmed that the legal team had regained full access to him. The statement added that Kanu is in stable health, thanks to recent medical care facilitated by the DSS, including an October 3, 2024, appointment with a doctor of his choice.
Hon. Aguocha expressed appreciation to the DSS leadership and the Speaker of the House for their roles in addressing the access issue, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding Kanu’s fundamental rights under the Nigerian Constitution and international agreements. He reiterated his optimism for a political resolution that could lead to Kanu’s release and contribute to peace in the South-East.
Aguocha’s actions underscore the ongoing pursuit of dialogue to address regional tensions and foster stability through legislative support and government cooperation.
