Awka, Anambra State – On Thursday, October 24, 2024, tragedy struck the Ifite community near Nnamdi Azikiwe University as gunmen opened fire, leaving several people dead. The incident, which occurred around 9:15 a.m., has thrown the community into turmoil, with students and residents gripped by fear following the sounds of heavy gunfire.
Eyewitness accounts describe the horrific scene. One person l reported, “Gunmen just shot a guy a few minutes ago at Ifite, Awka. He’s lying lifeless.” Another witness, a lecturer, said he saw seven bodies lying motionless, prompting him to turn back on his way to campus.
State Police Public Relations Officer Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the attack but did not provide an exact casualty count. He stated that a police response team had been dispatched to the area and assured the public that additional information would be released soon. “We received the information on the attack, and a police response team has been deployed to the scene,” Ikenga said.
This incident follows another tragic shooting in Awka South Local Government Area, where about 16 people were killed in Nibo during a festival on Sunday. Despite the state government’s commitment to apprehending those responsible, no arrests have been reported in connection with recent violent events, which authorities suspect are linked to cult activities.
