On the evening of September 15, 2024, tragedy struck Enugu State as Stephen Aniagu, the Chairman of Ogbete Main Market Traders’ Association (OMMATA), was brutally killed by gunmen suspected to be assassins. The attack occurred near Moses Ogbodo Junction, close to Topland Market, in the Amaechi area of Enugu South Local Government around 7 pm.

Eyewitnesses reported that Aniagu, likely heading home after the market closed, was shot multiple times, and his car was missing from the scene. His lifeless body was discovered riddled with bullets. The motive for the killing remains unknown.

This incident echoes previous unsolved murders in the state, including the assassination of Labour Party senatorial candidate Chief Oyibo Chukwu in 2023, and the killing of two APC chieftains in 2022. In each case, justice remains elusive as the perpetrators have yet to be held accountable.

The tragic loss of Mr. Aniagu adds to the growing concern over rising violence in our region.
