Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has called on traditional rulers across the South East to play a key role in safeguarding and promoting the rich cultural heritage of the region. Governor Otti made this appeal while addressing the South East Traditional Rulers Council during their one-day meeting at the JAAC Secretariat, Ogurube Layout, Umuahia.
In his remarks, Governor Otti emphasized the importance of culture as an identity that defines a people. He expressed concern over internal conflicts within some communities, where struggles for traditional rulership positions have resulted in the breakdown of family relationships. He cited the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, as a model of what traditional leadership should embody.
Governor Otti also highlighted the transient nature of power, stating that he views leadership as an opportunity to serve and urged the people to hold their leaders accountable. “Leadership under my administration is centered on stewardship,” he said, adding that his government remains committed to delivering services without self-interest.
The governor expressed his gratitude to the South East Traditional Rulers Council for choosing Abia State as the venue for their meeting, assuring them of the state’s hospitality. “A good leader must be a good listener and accountable to the people,” he added.
In his address, the Chairman of the South East Traditional Rulers Council and the Imo State Traditional Rulers Council, Eze E.C. Okeke, praised Governor Otti for his efforts in transforming Abia State. He noted that traditional rulers in the South East are proud of the governor’s achievements and his commitment to the state’s development. The council convened in Abia to discuss key issues affecting the region, and Eze Okeke commended the governor for maintaining peace and security in the state.
The Chairman of the Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Linus Mbah, and the Chairman of Umuahia North Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Innocent Nwaigwe, also lauded Governor Otti for fostering a harmonious relationship between the state government and traditional institutions. They emphasized that the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu would contribute to peace in the South East region.
