The Enugu State government has taken decisive action by demolishing yet another property allegedly used as a base for kidnapping activities. This serves as a stern warning to property owners, emphasizing that the state will not hesitate to bring down any structure linked to criminal acts.
In August, it was reported that properties in the Ogbeke Nike and Nkwubor Nike areas of Enugu East Local Government Area were demolished by the state government. These properties were tied to kidnapping activities, and a significant cache of arms and ammunition was recovered.
Legal Basis for Demolition
The demolition was carried out in accordance with Section 315 (Second Amendment) of the Criminal Code Law, Cap 30, Laws of Enugu State. This law stipulates that any building or structure used for criminal activities, such as kidnapping, will be demolished or forfeited to the state, regardless of whether the owner knew of the criminal use of the property.
Details of the Latest Demolition
Speaking to journalists at the demolition site in Amaebo Owelli Autonomous Community, Awgu Local Government Area, Mr. Uche Anya, the Executive Chairman of the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, explained that the mansion was used to hold kidnap victims. He referred to an incident in May 2024, where a video of a male victim, surrounded by AK-47 rifles, was recorded in the same building. The victim was later rescued, and several kidnappers were arrested, though the kingpin initially escaped.
The government tracked the kingpin’s movements, ultimately apprehending him in Lagos. A large quantity of firearms, including AK-47 rifles and semi-automatic weapons, were recovered from the property.
Government’s Stance on Criminal Properties
Mr. Anya clarified that demolishing such properties is intended to serve as a deterrent and to erase any reminders of the criminal activities that took place there. He dismissed suggestions of repurposing the buildings for public use, stressing that the Enugu State government does not want to profit from properties linked to crime.
He also urged property owners to be vigilant, warning that landlords will be held accountable for any criminal activities occurring on their premises. “If your property is used for violent crimes like kidnapping or armed robbery, we will take it down in line with the law,” he stated.
The government has since revoked the title deed of the demolished property and plans to build a clinic or another facility beneficial to the local community.
This action underscores the commitment of the Enugu State government, under Governor Peter Mbah, to eradicate criminality and restore peace and security to the state.
