In a move that has left many residents shocked and confused, the governments of Enugu and Imo States have imposed a 7-day ultimatum on citizens, threatening fines of up to N88,000 for using solar panels and generators. The authorities justify the directive as part of efforts to address environmental concerns, specifically targeting carbon emissions. However, this policy has sparked significant backlash, particularly from residents who rely on these alternative energy sources due to frequent and prolonged power outages.
The Enugu State Ministry of Government and Climate Change issued notices indicating that the use of alternative power supplies, including solar energy, violates environmental laws. The notice warns residents that they must pay the fine into a designated account by the deadline or face legal action. The solar panels in question include those provided by Lutec, a Chinese company specializing in solar technology.
Similarly, in Imo State, the government has intensified its crackdown on environmental violations, recently imposing a N2 million fine on Nneoha Bakery. The bakery was penalized for various infractions accumulated over the past three years, including toxic emissions and improper waste disposal.
Public reaction to these measures has been overwhelmingly negative, with social media platforms flooded with criticism. Many Nigerians question the logic of penalizing the use of renewable energy, which is widely regarded as a solution to the country’s chronic power shortages. Critics argue that these policies not only hinder progress toward sustainable energy but also exacerbate the daily struggles faced by the population.
As the debate continues, these latest measures have drawn sharp criticism, with many labeling them as counterproductive to both environmental protection and economic growth. The policies are seen by some as an overreach of government power, further complicating the already difficult living conditions for residents in these states.
