In a recent address, Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State revealed ongoing discussions between the State Government and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) about constructing a 330-megawatt transmission station. This project aims to improve the state’s energy supply, which has been a significant obstacle to industrialization.

Governor Nwifuru made this statement during an on-the-spot inspection of the Old Abakaliki Water Scheme and the Pulverisation Plant in Umuoghara, Ezza North Local Government Area. He expressed concern that the lack of sufficient energy has deterred potential investors from establishing industries in the state.

He explained, “We are embarking on major projects. Ebonyi State does not have an industry, not because people are unwilling to build industries, but because we lack the energy infrastructure to support them. Out of the 36 states, 33 already have 330kV transmission lines. Unfortunately, Ebonyi is one of the three that do not, alongside Zamfara. Bayelsa has already completed theirs, and we are now negotiating with TCN to ensure the project begins here.”

Water Supply Initiatives Underway

In addition to the energy project, Governor Nwifuru set a target for the completion of water supply projects by the end of September 2024. The administration plans to restore potable water to homes in the state capital, Abakaliki, and surrounding local government areas.

The governor highlighted that both the Oferekpe and Old Abakaliki Water Schemes are being reactivated. “We are committed to ensuring that water flows to every home. Oferekpe Water Scheme will begin pumping by the end of this month, benefiting Izzi, Abakaliki, Ebonyi, Ezza North, and Ezza South. Ukawu Water Scheme will soon receive government attention as well.”

Governor Nwifuru emphasized the importance of revitalizing the Old Abakaliki Water Scheme by upgrading facilities, including new pump houses and replacing outdated equipment. The water reservoir at Juju Hill has also been fully restored as part of these efforts.

This development reflects the administration’s dedication to addressing essential infrastructure needs to spur growth and improve the quality of life for residents of Ebonyi State.
