Chief Nwakpuda, a once-renowned king and fearless warrior, is one of those whose legacy deserves recognition, yet his story has been largely forgotten.
Chief Nwakpuda ruled during a time when colonial infrastructure was expanding into rural areas, including his kingdom. A man of strong principles, he opposed the construction of a railway line through his village in Umuahia. His opposition was rooted in his belief that the train posed a threat to the safety of the women in his kingdom. Even after the colonial government went ahead with the railway project, Nwakpuda remained defiant, vowing that no train would pass through his ancestral land.
When the day of the train’s test run arrived, the town criers spread the news throughout the village. Without disclosing his plans to anyone, Chief Nwakpuda prepared for what he believed was his final stand. He sharpened his war cutlass, a symbol of his readiness to defend his people, and marched to the newly laid rail track.
As the train approached, the driver saw the imposing figure of Nwakpuda standing resolute on the track, armed and unyielding. The train’s horn blared in warning, but Nwakpuda remained steadfast, mocking the machine as it drew nearer. To him, the train’s cry was the sound of an animal that had not yet felt the sting of his blade. But his defiance would soon meet a tragic end. The powerful locomotive could not stop in time, and Chief Nwakpuda was struck down, his body crushed beneath the train.
While this event marked the end of Chief Nwakpuda’s life, it was far from the end of his story. The British colonial masters who witnessed his final act of bravery were deeply moved by his unwavering commitment to his principles. In recognition of his extraordinary courage, they erected an epitaph at the very site where he fell. This tribute immortalized Nwakpuda as a symbol of resistance, a warrior king who gave his life to protect his land and people.
Though his name may not be widely known today, Chief Nwakpuda’s story remains a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought against colonial rule.
