İn the early hours of Friday, 4th October 2024, Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, successfully prevented an attempted takeover of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) by a team of police officers led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations).
The police officers reportedly attempted to breach the gates and access the strong room of the Commission around 1 AM, with the alleged aim of seizing sensitive electoral materials intended for Saturday’s local government elections in the state.
The plot was foiled when alert security personnel on duty promptly informed the principal officers of the Commission and the relevant government authorities. Governor Fubara, upon receiving the report, swiftly responded by leading a high-profile delegation to the RSIEC facility. The team included lawmakers from both the National Assembly and the State House of Assembly, as well as top political stakeholders and leaders.
The swift intervention by the Governor and his team ensured that the electoral materials remained secure, safeguarding the integrity of the upcoming elections. Further developments are expected as investigations into the incident continue.
